Selling standing timber

I'm interested to know what success/uptake there is with selling standing timber among woodland owners/managers, especially in Oxfordshire/Gloucestershire?

 

Are there firms that will pay competitively for hardwood polestage (12-20" dbh) thinning, and how are people accessing these markets?

Standing timber can fetch decent money and that site looks nice and level. The price per meter or per ton that toy will get depends on many factors including total volume, site access, is there a decent loading area with access for artics? Is the site all nice a level like the photo or are there steep banks and bogs? Is the spacing adequate for a harvester and forwarder combo or will a smaller scale approach be required? You will need to ensure that a felling license is in place and be prepared for lots of muddy ruts and brash everywhere.

I wish that was closer to me, you won't struggle to sell it anyway.

 

If it's thinning you can probably get a felling license fairly easily yourself, clearfell is a bit more work, then contact local contractors to fell it. Just make sure you agree how it's being weighed/measured, extraction routes, brash management, minimum diameter to cut etc 

 

Alternatively you can pay someone else to do proper contracts and manage everything but if you're replanting and paying someone to organise there won't be a huge amount in it.

 

I've dealt with HW forestry before when buying standing timber but they're probably too far.

Those trees look a bit small and fiddly to process with machinery, but to your benefit the site looks nice and level.  I'm aware of local firewood processors in Scotland offering £24 per tonne standing for about an estimated 300 tonnes of firewood.  Its a b@stard of a location though (steep banks, lots of wet bits and streams) and access is not great. You get about double that if the wood is higher quality and fit for the mill.

Cant see any stumps but from the spacing it looks like its already had first thinnings ? Are there any racks , about 7 row intervals ? looks an easy site if its firm .

Yeah, way out of area -  I'm not really even sure where Gloucestershire is!  Generally I steer folk towards the merchants if it's a clearfell, for smaller thinnings like this it might be possible to find a firewood merchant who'd be interested.  Biomass can be an awkward market now due to the nonsense that is Woodsure, so I'd guess firewood is probably your best bet.  Don't know anyone down there who'd be interested, but you could try trawling through the firewood suppliers groups on Facebook, you might be able to sell it through there.

 

Do you know roughly how many tons / cubes you're trying to sell?  Species?

We had 1000 tonnes of oak felled last year. In Gloucestershire. Haven't been paid for it yet. So there are certain contractors / agents to avoid. Won't name publicly but do private message me if you want to be forewarned.

That looks like an ideal woodland for me, but you are too far away. There must be some lower impact forestry contractors in your area. Toby at Say it with wood is not too far from you.
