Best weedkiller for ground Ivy.

For the sons place in Belfast. He wishes to put down low maintenance surfacing and wants the ground Ivy killed first.

Something to discourage the Privet stumps from the hedge I just removed, from resprouting before he gets a digger in to dig founds for the replacement wall would also be nice. I just removed the hedge at ground level before birds started nesting(not that I found a single nest of any sort)

Cheers all

Ivy when growing on the ground can be pretty stubborn.  Try and remove as much of the organic matter as possible (grass, leaves, moss) as possible but leave small ivy stumps for the weed killer to act on.  I use Rosate but any Glyphosate herbicide will work.  I use the strongest recommended mix.

I did this last spring as so far so good.

Whatt does low maintenace surfacing mean concrete tarmac etc?

I suggested pink granite over membrane, I suspect he is thinking of pavoirs/flags or some other brush/blow clean surface, cos there are mature trees along the street that shed leaves.

Hopefully sommat not too soulless, but if he will not keep the grass and hedges cut, it will be tidier for the neighbours.

Btw. His sister is a super keen gardener and her place is "on it's edge". From being a shit hole when she bought it.

Muddy42,

I had figured/gueßed/hoped Glyphosphate should work.

Cheers,

Marcus

Once a yrs job taking a few hrs to pull any climbing ivy off any walls trees unless its a massive garden

And u can strim it off walls etc very fast if its only less than 1 yrs old growth.

Also its very shallow rooted so easy to remove normally.

Gravel under trees is a pretty bad idea imo and high maintenance in general.

& unless you remove leaves regularly they then will mix with  the gravel then u get weeds growing so a leaf blower is needed.

Out of curiosity Are we talking about the dead nettle relative, Glechoma hederacea, or the ground dwelling variant of common ivy, Hedera helix ?

Paul, in so far as this 63 year old horticultural ignoramous is concerned, tis proper Ivy, growing on the ground, and up through the hedge as well. Or visa versa.
