Volume of material always stays the same, a chipper allows the material to compact easier.

Before I owned a chipper I’d mash it down with the saw in trailers, then tippers and you could really cram it in.  Especially with a high back door.

90% I was told with a chipper.

I always think my little 6” chipper reduces volume/compacts better than the bigger 10” one.

Smaller chips stack together better than the bigger ones.

Id agree. Seems the big drum chippers dont reduce it as small as disks either. Also, if its blunt the chips are moosive.

Never done the maths, but the volume reduction is massive, plus its throwing the branches on the truck for you.

What may be happening is that one tends to stick bigger wood through the big chipper that the small one wouldn't handle. So instead of putting cordwood aside separately it all goes through the chipper. Solid wood processed through the chipper increased in volume 2-3 fold.
