Lanyard/sidestrop mechanical friction device ideas

For my friction on my lanyard I currently use a Vt on a pinto pulley. I’ve found that actually the pinto is probably my most useful piece of kit because I’m always using my lanyard on my main bridge as a second main line (5m rope). I really like how neat the whole system is. I’ve just starting looking for a mechanical friction device for my lanyard. The 2 main ones I’ve been looking at is the art positioner and the petzl zillion.

I guess my questions are:

1. Are Both these devices are rated to work on a rope using it like a main line as opposed to like a lanyard just on my Ds?

and

2. Is there a way to have these devices, or an attachment where I can clip the carabiner back into the same system to make it neat and tidy like the pinto?

cheers

I use the ART positioner with the swivel, Really good bit of kit. I did have a Petzl Zillon for a previous employer, which was nicer to use in terms of modulation but the lack of swivel was a pain.

I’ve used them both as a short climbing line and worked ok, don’t know about the rating for this though. AFAIK I don’t think there is an option to use them clipped to themselves-if this is a deal breaker you may be best sticking with the pinto and changing up the hitch cord to keep it smooth?

I use VT and pinto like you, but about 8m of rope for second line when needed.

I don't think either of those devices are rated for climbing support, only for work positioning lanyard. Reason as far as I can tell is they don't have progressive release for lowering under load.

I'm sticking with hitch but I guess ready for someone to show something that is genuinely better.

The positioner 2 will lower under load but it's a PITA and not worth the faffing.

Hitch and a pulley for a short climbing line/long side strop.

This article sheds a bit of light.

"However, it can get complicated in single-leg mode, especially when using the device in a VERTICAL application.

When employed vertically, both the Zillon and Positioner have a tendency to release rather abruptly. In this situation, inexperienced climbers might clench the release mechanisms open, applying a 'death grip', falling the entire length of the lanyard, risking contact with obstacles on the way down."

These look good for a land yard pulley. Two point's of attachment. Have a look. I'm looking forward to trying one

As one who only climbed with simple knots or a shunt it is interesting how expensive these aids are. I take it some of the cost is due to the many recalls we seem to hear about/

The real beauty of an art positioner or petzl zillion is no matter how much resin or conifer sap is on your lanyard they are still very easily advanced compared to a knot, bit of a downside is sometimes when you are working at awkward angles the bridge on a treemotion can release them slightly but the pros outweigh the cons for me anyway
