Poplar

Hi,

 

I have a chance of getting some Poplar for firewood, what`s it like for burning, any good? thanks in advance!

I like the phrase, nobody is picky about firewood when they're cold.

 

Providing it's dried and kept dry, it all burns.

Not the greatest I will freely say but never bad to have more firewood than you need and mix it.

I think its good . Different species my vary a bit . The key is get it split and in the log store as soon as . Plenty of air but covered from rain . It absorbs wet like blotting paper if you don't . Skyhuck ( a member on here ) boiled his central heating with poplar .

I'm usually spoiled for choice and whilst having nothing against burning dried poplar apart from having to reload the stove more frequently a drawback is the extra space needed to store it, same is true of some of the softwoods too.

If you are unsure and don't want it next time you are passing Glasgow I can give it a home....

 

I think that is my answer - given a choice of a tonne of this, tonne of that I might be selective but,,,, it burns when dry, being a softwood the heat comes out of it quick - short hot fires and needing refuelling often, and I wouldn't say no to it.

 

Consensus or opinion on this forum recently appears to be that a mix of woods is probably the best way to go and here poplar would fit right in the mix, but still, on it's own, in a stove, go for it

Its A hardwood , being a deciduous  tree .

Flip side being Cedar is a softwood, burns beautifully. Let's not even mention Balsa being a hardwood🤣

Ceder does indeed burn fine , I have burnt a whole Atlas blue ceder . I also like Leylandii , excellent fire wood . I thought about doing the Balsa thing but thought , no but , alas you did it 😀

I agree, or dries easily but gets very light as it does so burns fine but very quickly. If you've plenty of wood and can be picky I'd possibly pass, if not then it's fine to take.

Never had any luck with Poplar even when well seasoned and if you leave it too long it starts to disintegrate on the woodpile. It doesn't flame and it smoulders without giving much heat on our fire and we don't have problems burning anything else. Tell a lie, Goat Willow doesn't go well either
