I'm gonna say its an old " ice box "  Is it in a north facing bank ? and is there a " warren " near by ?

Don't know much about it mate, a fella in the village asked me if I know what it is. I'll take a walk up there this weekend and have a look for myself.

There is one in a steep bank/hill in the grounds of West Dean estate . ( it was on the shoot and the drive was called " the ice box "  ) Across the road is a place called the warren . It is now a few estate cottages but used to be used to breed rabbits for food . The meat was hung in the  " ice box " .

There is an ice box on the Audley End Estate in Saffron Waldon where we used to beat, it was a lot bigger than the one in the picture though.

I think back in the day most estates had one .

That's a spring. Loads of them around me. They were also used for keeping things cool.

I'd agree with Spring, seen similar around here.

Lots of Ice Houses here, recently did work on top of one. There's a tunnel entrance with full size door on the other side.

We have a ( ice house ) on the estate I manage have sealed / blocked up the entrance now as lots of youths started using it as a “ smoking parlour “ I’d say it’s at least 15” square doors on a north bank as well. I used to play in it as a kid making camps and playing war 🙄. How times have changed
