Ex-Fleet vans

Anyone got info on where to buy ex-fleet vans from? Is it worth it or are they likely to be f’ed?

Background is that I’m going back into work car scheme (hopefully, if car ever gets delivered!) in a few months but am loathe to let my accrued 9 years NCB lapse. (I know, I could alternate it with another policy but I did that years ago and ended up cocking up!)

So I’m wondering about buying a van for shifting stuff in / being spare vehicle / fetching firewood etc. Doesn’t need to be glam - but ideally Transit Connect or VW T4 size. This would then get insured and let me keep up the NCB.

You’ve got two years before you lose your no claims, but it seems to make sense what you’re proposing.

Buying ex-fleet wouldn’t bother me with a van, they will have been serviced regularly and a lot of the mileage may be easy motorway stuff (depending on the fleet!).

Van Monster are part of Northgate and sell all their ex-fleet.

If your NCB was built up with cars, your insurance may not transfer it to a van as they class it a commercial vehicle.

Some insurers will allow a switch one way, but not the other. I forget which way it is.

I have seperate NCB for my car and  van because of this.

It also crossed my mind to buy a London Taxi; they have got stupid miles on the clock but can be had with MOT and reasonable looking bodywork for about £800. Can’t get four sheets of ply in one though…

Horrendous hateful things. Don't buy one, they're truly awful.

You should be able to use a small van under private insurance with legitimate reason, eg you own a large dog and need the load space, you are a keen amateur fisher/archer etc and want to carry your own (non commercial) goods on a regular basis. Axa definitely did it on a case by case basis.

You ain't gonna get cover for a jumbo tranny or sprinter. Berlingo, connect, dispatch size should be OK.

Didn't know that. I've only run Sprinters, all 3.5t.

I went from a Corsa van years ago on a personal policy to a car and it wasn't transferable. Although that was probably 15 years ago.

My personal NCB lapsed after just having business insured vehicles for the past 8 years. I started a new personal policy at 32 with no NCB a couple of years ago for a weekend car (insurance group 20) and it was only £200. It'll be worth getting an online quote with no NCB, see whether its actually worth going through the hassle of saving them.
