Vermiculite is an insulator but you want heat to pass into the bricks when the range is fired and then pass out again as it cools. So I would think cutting the bricks to fit well and getting dry sand into the gaps would be best.

Firebricks.....what about old storage heater bricks....they are there to store heat and emit it over a long period!

I’ve got a little stack of them under a pallet log store! I’m digging them out in the morning too

That's right, you need a thermal conductor between the fire and the bricks. Water would do it but may corrode over a while. Sand may work and would be less messy. You should be able to find someone ripping storage heaters out of somewhere!

I do find Syrup Pudding and Custard retains heat very well..may be the way forward!
