Just realized our MEWP hire company has been charging us for hired in plant insurance  at 20 percent of the hire cost. When we have hired in plant with NFU.. I don't pay our invoices so not seen them,  but we have been hiring a truck mount full time for last few months and noticed the nearly £3k a month was rather more than I was quoted..

Ask hire company if they do hire cover.

I did once sit down and read the hire contract and the insurance sold by them. For 15% of the hire fee they covered only the used market value of said machine, in the hire contract it was new for old and the hirer was to pay for lost hire fees until the new one was in service. Just to rub salt into the wounds the payout was ex vat and the replacement was full retail plus vat 🤪

I need to hire a chipper for a few days here and there - any recommendations for short term plant insurance? Don't want to get stung for a £20k chipper if anything happens!

Personally I would recommend using the hire companies own insurance for any short term hired in gear if you do not have your own

It is not only theft but also damage to equipment we periodically hired in MEWPS for certain wind damaged jobs where climbing was not an option  we never needed to use it so peace of mind until on one occasion chogging down a length of cord struck one of the hydraulic out reach arms (ouch)

would have been very costly if we had not been covered just my opinion like and as has been stated above caveat emptor with the old small print and all that! the firm we hired from were bang on though all the best!
