Transit tipper problem

Recommended Posts

My Transit has developed a problem on the down cycle of the tipping bed.

It tips up fine and strongly, but will only lower in small shunts, having to turn off the tipper electronic control on the dash between each shunt.

Taking about 8 shunts to get it back down.

I’ve topped up the hydraulic oil, which was rather low, but the problem persists.

What’s next, battery?

Haven’t tried yet.

Obviously on the down cycle it’s normally empty.

Only found out yesterday when I’d tipped the only load, and it’s not getting filled today because we are stacking in a woodland.

Sounds like the solenoid is on the way out. Tipping up is via the hydraulic pump, while coming back down is purely by gravity, the solenoid opens a valve and hydraulic fluid flows from the ram back into the reservoir, driven by the weight of the bed. If the solenoid fails completely and you're stuck with the body tipped there's two options, either slacken off the pipe and lose the fluid or else apply a really strong magnet (like a magnetic welding clamp) to the outside of the solenoid, which should open the valve and allow the bed to descend.

Long term, replace the solenoid.

In the valve is a restrictor which stops the bed slamming down when you press the down button, it doesn't take much at all for the restrictor to become blocked. Take it off and blow it through.

Kirklands made a new body for me but still on original tipping gear.

I THINK from VFS, but can’t remember 100%.

Where would that valve be @eggsarascal?
