CS30/CS31 kit list

Good morning all. 
 

Hope your all well. Looking to doing my CS30 and CS31 course and would like to start getting my own kit bit by bit before hand. I’ve looked on line and all list are different. Would anyone who as done the course be able to help me out with what I need? Also what Sthil saw would be the best for this course?

assuming you are budgeting for a pro saw then you should be looking at an ms261

Does it have to be a Stihl ?   If not it will widen your options .

Somehow general public only recognize stihl as the pro brand most don't know husky etc

If you intend to use the certificate to enter full time employment you will need a pro saw. Any 50cc saw with a max 15” guide will be suitable. Stihl 261, Husqvarna 550xp, but you could also look at Dolmar/Makita and Echo.

I would suggest that whatever saw you purchase you have it fitted with a semi chisel chain, if you are training in hardwoods and doing bore cuts you may struggle with full chisel. You will need a filling kit for the saw, buy a magnetic file guide(about £6) and a Vernier calliper for measuring the cutter lengths ( screw fix do a decent pair for about £15), these will help you to sharpen spot on. A few spare bits like a spark plug/break band and a clean soft paintbrush for cleaning the dust off the air filter.

When it comes to PPE, get the best you can afford, try and visit somewhere like Honey Brothers/ Fr Jones where you can try the stuff on rather than ordering from the internet, nothing worse than poor fitting PPE. You might be better off with a pair of type ‘C’ trousers for now, especially if you intend to climb down the line.

I'd echo what has been said, 261 or a 550. Nothing worse than someone showing up with a 661!

Think I did C30/31 with a ms181 but would of being more fun with a 261 or 550XP

That is not a reason . If you get the job done using your wang it won't matter .

I looked recently, i think gloves are required for it.

 

Helmet with face shield and ear defenders, safety glasses, chainsaw trousers, chainsaw boots, chainsaw gloves i think it was.
