I've got an at least 20 year old climbing frame that I've never treated although I'm guessing it probably was from new, do you think t's OK to birn it on a wood burner or might it give off something either not good to breath in or that may damage the burner?

I  burn old fence posts on mind all the time. It's well seasoned, so burns a treat.

If it was only painted from new and not treated then I don't see the problem.  I doubt there is much paint left on it anyway after 20 years!

If pressure treated I'm not sure, certainly you aren't meant to burn treated wood but not sure of the level of risk now as the most nasty chemicals are now banned.  The theory goes that any chemical in the wood gets concentrated in the ash or goes up the chimney but no idea on the details.

I'd be very wary of burning any treated timber, the old fashioned chromated copper arsenate is really not good for our health when burnt . My mother was a big fan of burning treated wood from her neighbours landscaping projects right up until the lung cancer got her ?

I also burn old fence posts with no obvious ill effects to the stove or chimmny, just make sure you get the nails out before you cut it up as chains don't like nails !

I just cut in between the nails and scoop them out with the ash later .
