The pantin is great when ur up against the trunk and footlocking is tricky! Otherwise i prefer to footlock!

I use a pantin in exactly the same way as footlocking i,e use both my feet to propel myself, using it near the trunk sucks.

The only advantage is you don't have to lift the weight of the rope as you scoop it up to lock the rope, its a small advantage but noticable for me.

A disadvantage is the pantin can damage the rope.

But I am crap at footlocking, so maybe its just me

Have been using this same system for a while after talking to Sherill Trees, think its called the frog works really well. Saves time and most importantly is far more ergonomically efficient.

Oh happy days

i love footlocking, not saying it's better(quicker in my eyes probably not more energy efficient) it's an art form. i'd feel it would be a shame to throw away a skill that i've been trying to hone for years. you feel good after a fast footlock. 'christ i'm up already'.

used srt a few times it is good. top anchor snapped (my mate set it up for me) on me once, fell a few metres till it caught on a lower limb. my mate was pissing himself.

I've pooh poohed footlocking for years, mainly because most of my stuff is big takedowns. Last week Peter was working with me and used footlocking in some really usefull ways.

I'm going to start practising the art from now on.

I worked with a young climber last year and couldn't believe the speed he could get up the tree using foot locking, I however, am hopeless at it but I do use a Pantin for trimming work,DRT, it saves my arm which is in constant pain for some reason.
