Don't really want to stick my oar in here, but a lot of people here in Ireland would consider it rude to call over the weekend.

Fair point, although it wouldn't bother me if I was looking for contractors. Craig could have rang yesterday at a decent hour to arrange work for Monday, perhaps I've missed the point but if I was skint I'd be ringing folk at the earliest opportunity.

Yup, You've got to be in it to win it.
Ring whoever has work, explain your predicament and you'll land on your feet.
Most people have fallen on hard times at some point. It will get better if you keep going.

and if he's really lucky he'll get to talk to the bloke who's worrying about how he's going to staff that job on monday morning.

I've been on my own a long time, most of the time work finds me. When it doesn't I'm on the phone for freelance work at the earliest opportunity.
