They arent doing you any favours, the more people that have an accident with a top handle saw the more the chance that the HSE will ban the sales of top handle saws.

The HSE wanted to ban top handle saws, and still do, we all sat round a table some years ago and agreed to police the the selling of these machines within the industry, stickers were produced to stick on the boxes saying only to be used by qualified persons, one of the reasons they gave was what they called the migration of these machines into the domestic market, also the use of these machines one handed, carry on flouting the un written law and this type of machine will disappear.

At the moment I’m using the ms170 for my tree work, it’s light and just about does the jobs I need it for and if I need a bigger saw I use the ms250. I’ve got the maintenance and the tree felling ticket which I’ve had for twenty year now and I’m now going for the two tickets i mentioned at the top of the post. I’ve been out of the tree industry for a few years and I thought I’d start up my old garden maintenance business again, this is why I’m going for the tickets for the tree work.

talking to you folks through Arbtalk on various topics is setting me in the right direction to becoming a competent tree arborists and I would like to thank you for your help, plus these topics will help others as well.

My question for you about the top handled saw is why would these bodies be wanting to ban the top handled saw? Plus I’ll not be mentioning any dealer names.

Its just because of the high number of accidents with them. Plus I guess in their eyes there isnt any reason why you need a top handle saw.

We all put a lot of effort in and then anyone can go along a buy this for less than £90, can cause just as much damage as the the husky/stihl equivalent.

The Parker 26cc 10" petrol top handle topping chainsaw has a 10" blade, which makes it perfect for topping or trimming...

I've just had a look at around 5 different listing for top handle saws on ebay, between them over a 1,000 units sold, thats a lot of Mr/Mrs homeowner adding to the HSE stats.

What’s the benefits of using one then if there’s more accidents with them, I would have thought if both hands are on the saw like a rear handled saw and your in a comfortable working position and your cutting where your not going to get kickback then no accident should happen. I may be wrong

I’ll wait until I’ve got my ticket and stay on the safe side.
