...or is it me?

I've been looking for a long run of work between now and Christmas so I can go away to Spain , Portugal for a few months in my motorhome over winter. I got two starts this week, one isn't bad money £250/day, this is working shifts mind and paid monthly, no thanks, I'm not working all of this month and September on the promise of you paying me, his words were "put your invoice in at the end of the month and we'll pay you in 30 days", I don't think so chum, I don't know you from Adam. Another fella rang me back this afternoon, "Afternoon Simon, "we would like you to start on Monday", "great say I, what's the rate?", "£130/day if you can set the job out for us", "I'll give it a miss fella", he sounded like I was being the awkward one!

Am I being unreasonable?

Very

How dare you expect decent money.

I thought it was me. This is a big sewage treatment plant (1000 population), and they wanted me to sort all the levels as well as help install it for £130/day on CIS, so they stop me 20% at source. I don't think so.

The second guys taking the piss obviously, as for the first. Well thats how big companies run now. 30 days is actually pretty good! I often wait in excess of 90 days.

I'm on 30 days with a couple of companies I sub to, but I know and trust them. The company that were offering decent money are a two man band that only formed last year. I don't fancy being 8 weeks in and not getting paid.

They only get away with 90 days because people let them.

It's a joke what folk get away with, I'm not short of a few quid but I'm not rolling in money either. At the moment I'm owed £3,800 for work I've done, not a lot of money to the big boys but it's a lot of money to me.

The economy has hit the top of the curve and is starting to drop in some areas. There will be lots of bust projects, non-payment etc in the next couple of years. I’ve reacted by putting my prices up and taking a deposit. I am considering taking 100% in advance but deposit is working for now.

It's another scam.
That's business. [emoji848][emoji107]
I stipulate that I get paid at the end of the job, before I leave site.
I do domestic and commercial.
Unless we have had prior working experience and an arrangement, that's my terms. Non negotiable.
Some jobs with several staff and machines, which go over 1 week,
I stipulate staged payments so I can afford to pay staff etc.

However the milling business is different, quite happy to drop off a grands worth of timber and wait 30 days for payment, as most of my clients are small scale woodworkers.
