I don't believe its a ranking factor, at least not in the same way as other incoming links. But if its sending traffic to your site then that certainly adds to its value.

On that note, people are using facebook all wrong in my opinion. Posts on facebook should be links to longer blog posts on your site. Having facebook posts on your site that lead people to facebook is totally the wrong way of going about things in my opinion.

true to a point but my facebook page is a long list of previous jobs i have done for customers so in my case i use that as the advert rather than my own webpage but customers can reach me through either method.

if facebook is to be used as a method to get customers to employ you then should you not treat both FB and your own webpage with equal care???

It's used a lot for recommendations.. The local I love "my village" groups.  I did sign up to a bunch of local groups for a while in an attempt to get in the mix but the majority seemed to be low end work and I got bored with trawling through the other posts..

These are rarely genuine recommendations, they are just people recommending their friends.

Having buzzed off out and priced from fb enquiries, I don’t really get excited by them anymore.

All the time they seem to have a way cheaper price from their uncle / boyfriends mate / mother in laws lesbian lover etc etc., who will cycle over with a 50 year old mcculloch and accept a packet of fags and a gallon of petrol in part payment

I stopped sharing my business page to FB groups because there seems to be an  expectation of 'low cost' tree work.

I win more quotes at a greater margin if the client comes from other sources.

I use the FB page as a shop window, refering potential clients to it.

FB is good for shifting wood and chip though.
