I've worn them in the past under my strides when we used to get bitter cold winters but that seems not to be any more .  Not against ticks  but to keep warm obviously !

I have a friend who was in the Scots Guards in the Falklands War who said they used to wear them to keep warm. He wouldn't confirm that they switched to stockings and sussies in the warmer weather.

If I didn't know you and Bolam better I'd swear that you've had a bet on who could get the biggest whopper through without anyone noticing this evening...

There are chemical wash-in products you can buy from hiking shops that supposedly stay in the fabric for weeks, even after washing again, that work, so they say. Can't remember the name of the chemical, but it's synthetic chrsanthymum extract, I think. Same chemical is in Spot-On, cattle and sheep treatment, much much cheaper. Also same chemical is in fly spray. You could try an aerosol can of fly spray and just spray your trouser cuffs, or wherever the ticks get in, and see if it works?

Permethrin?

Permethrin?

Yes, that's the one! It's in generic fly spray. It doesn't harm synthetic fabrics. Feet is not really effective against ticks I've read, but works well against midges and mosquitos.

Melts some fabrics. Beware.

Deet is evil stuff. I bought some 96% stuff which is illegal in some countries. Used it to remove some graffiti from a utilities kiosk, and will never again use it on my skin. They recommend not touching your polycarbonate spectacle lenses if it's on your hands, as it melts the plastic and leaves a permanent finger print. For midges I've been using Autan Tropical, which is 20% Icaridine, which is a synthetic pepper, or something. I looked into it and seems much less toxic than Deet, and doesn't affect plastics or fabrics. Works as well as Deet, for me.

Theres a product called Deet

Ok it kills insects.. but it won't do you any good either....also melts plastic and fecks up the taped seals on VERY expensive breathable fabrics....it's the active ingredient in jungle formula and many other nasty products, there are much more friendly alternatives, you just have to try then till you find something that suits you...

If any arsehole sprays Permethrin  anywhere near me just to kill a fly I GTF pronto after offering to shove the can  right up their wotsit...  it's evil shit.

Here's a link if anyone can be bothered
