Dying Redwoods

Is there something killing Redwoods in the UK. I see they are susceptible to SOD in California.

One of my clients has a number of biggish (for the uk) redwoods, one died 6 or 7 years ago another started looking ropey last year and has gone from bad to worse in a pretty short time..

There is at least one more on site and they are keen to do anything they can to stop what is doing it.... 

 

The completely dead one has been left standing and is still quite a feature.. This one is close to the drive so may have to go.

I've got a couple of three which I can see from my office which are looking dreadful. I'd put it down to root disturbance catching up with them. No other symptoms apart from dieback. I'm sure I've heard a few other people talking about dying Wellies too.

There where several large softwoods including some impressive sized Lawson Cypress that turned brown and died over a few months on a site I was working on in Kent last year, pretty sure they narrowed it down to Phytophthora lateralis.

Where abouts is it Ben.? I’ve just done a clearance job in denham Uxbridge and there’s a big place just down the road from the old film studios with a big poorly looking redwood you can see from the road. And it looks just like your picture. Be interesting to find out.

The only dead one we have had over was Honey Fungus we were told .

This is news to me? We have major SOD problems here, but I have seen no evidence of SOD crossing over into the Reds. Haven't even heard it being suggested around here? SOD is definitely linked to the Umbellularia Californica here, and I have my suspicions that it is also infecting some stressed Firs.

I always thought they where very susceptible to honey fungus and phytophthora .. over my career spread out I’ve done and quoted a few and it hasn’t been an over night thing.

Dry summers blazing their root area? The thinking that they are forest trees and individual specimens miss having the shade from their mates? K
