So we have large piles of soil mixed with smaller rock kicking about. I could do with separating the rock as it would be handy as hardcore and the soil could be spread on our fields.

Now I am wondering if I could make use of our loader which has a 360 pallet rotator. Thinking about making up a decent sized drum of heavy duty 1" weld mesh attached to the rotator and loading it with the tractor. The rotator does not turn quickly but does this matter? I don't want to balls up the rotator but it's heavy duty so I am presuming it would be happy enough spinning away for a while. Anyone any experience of trommels and what does and doesn't work?

Hiring in must be a better bet surely? Doesn't @dig-dug-dan have a view on this

Anyway I was looking at something to classify arb woodchip so I could use it in my pellet stove (before I took it out, it sits in shed with Jotul 602 currently) and I too had plumped on @dumper's idea of using a cement mixer, I have a Belle minimix (which is probably not up to loading with your Gehl).

The drum is replacebale so I was going to cut that out so it passed the big stuff onto the floor. I had used http://www.anglering.com/ to roll be some rings before and was going to make a cylinder with perforated steel plate attached to the drum  and rest the open end on two opposed wheel barrow wheels.

Definately screen it first.  It makes crushing quicker, you get a cleaner product, and its less wear on the crusher jaw plates.

Avant do a screening drum now which is worth a look
