@swinny i do and i don't regret selling the 530, good machine, but it was getting old, i earned good money when i sold it, and i was hankering after a step up in capacity. 

 

Easier said than done finding a decent 2nd hand 540 with the 50hp engine, fair few with the 37hp

Have you considered the new 280 on tracks? 230s bigger brother

 

@Mick Dempsey the bigger chippers have their place if you do a lot of clearance work where you can get near the tree and chip on site or have a big wagon to chip into. 

 

Pointless if its your only chipper though.

Ive thought about it Joe, but my mate, who happens to be the TW dealer now, has gone from a 230 - 280 and back down to a 230 for his demo machines, thinks it suits our worksites better. a 230 will still be an upgrade in capability to a 530

Yes Josh the tw230 will wipe the floor with the a530 thus my pencil sharpener quote lol.

I have both and not many like using the 530 with sloping hopper. The tw230 mashes everything but I worry about how long it will last. I would upgrade from the tw230 to something better made but what is there? Nothing

 So basically you need st8 capability without buying an st8? That's a tough one.

I’ve recently upgraded our 230 tracked and old 150 road tow to a 280 tracked and 280 road tow. The reason behind this was we wore the 230 out in three years.
I originally bought the 230 tracked one as I thought it would be a bit more heavy duty than the sub 750kg road tow version because weight wasn’t a factor as it had to go on a trailer to site anyway, but we managed to wear the front flywheel plate that much it put a curve in it. In 700 hours use. To be fair we did try and feed as much timber through it as possible because it just eats it.
They do punch well above their weight. But there lies the problem. The build strength isn’t there to cope with the processing ability it has.
If you compare the sub 750kg 230 road tow or tracked chipper with the metal work on the 280 there is a massive difference in size and strength. In my experience I would go for strength and Longevity rather than reduced weight for the for the sub750kg class.

the old Timberwolf 230 is a beautiful machine and properly industrial compared with the modern 230. Back in those days they proudly called it 230 because it would chip 230mm.

I was watching this one before xmas, regretting not pulling the trigger, sold for 8000 plus vat, showing under 600 hours, would have been £9600 well spent imo. Even with the inevitable repair bills that come with a used machine. I have heard these old air cooled beasts do suffer with electrical problems

David Gould on FB has one for sale 8k, appeared 4 hrs ago if you want another bite..
