Today's milling

[Rough Hewn]

Had to trim this sycamore severely to get the panther mill to fit.


The union was all the way through the log.
It'll look epic as resin tabletops.

Nothing glamorous, just plodding away at the Douglas, knocked up a decent amount of 5x5, 6x3 and 6x1 beams and planks. Quite a few are too big for the mill so it’s back to the Alaskan for those. Tried it yesterday with winch for first time ??night and day difference, only wish I’d fitted it earlier.

This nicely spalted Beech was cut down on Monday this week and this 2.1m section was about 7m up in the tree.

You might of seen it on the today’s job thread on Bigtreedon last post.

Wood that nice ought to be put on the wall like a painting, I'd spend a lot of time just looking at it. ?

Couple of things Andy 

New much bigger log store that I want to build and looking to extend the roof to create a larger overhang on a cabin I have in the garden. The remainder I’ll just try and process up into beams and planks and store them under cover, the offcuts get used for the log burner so no waste. I need to get my finger out as it’s not doing it any favours being left lying outside.

Nice! I hope you post a build thread? I need to build a barn/log store sooner or later as well.

Been quarter sawing some Oak for a customer.

Our first attempt at Quarter sawing.

Need to work on the chainsaw skills!

Very nice. What diameter log was that?

 

How long did it take to split in half with the Chainsaw? ? 

 

Did you quarter it with the chainsaw too?

That one was just under 1m diameter, it took a good few hours to split. It had to be turned to finish the cut. The cuts didn't quite meet up so we ended up using the telehandler forks as wedges and splitting the last bit apart.  To Quarter it we put it on the mill, took a couple of inches off the top, then could mill through the middle to get a quarter.

If I get some 1m Oak in again I think I'll take Big J's advice and split it in half with the Alaskan. Sounds like that would take slightly less time and less work as well. Might even take a couple of full sized boards outta the middle that would naturally be quarter sawn then cargo strap the remaining halves together, rotate 90 degrees and run the Alaskan through them again.
