Today's milling

If you're going to be using it just around your own place for milling, then a rough terrain forklift is very good value. You'd pick a very very good one up for £10k, an old but serviceable dog for £4k easy. Will laugh at big old lumps of oak. Put some longish forks on it and it will be much more stable when loading the mill than a telehandler too. Often they are sold with a toe tip bucket which would also be handy.

 

My local sawmill use one and they are on the roughest, muddiest shithole you can imagine when it's wet. It's not 4wd and it does just fine.

Elm on a back garden thro a narrow gate chainsaw milled the big log and halfed the smaller ones to get them out just befor Xmas then finished milling the half's in the good weather we've just had.

I'll get a rough terrain if forced into it, but I think they are just to big for my needs, plus it has to live at the house and Id rather not have something so ugly siting in full view.

Yeah I'm sure it's a good machine just hope it doesn't need to much tlc due to its age and only rear steering on the older ones.

This just sold on ebay not long ago 5100 +vat.

Not a cat in hells chance that’s a legit ad that machine is min 10k below what it’s worth. The amount of scams involving plant and machinery is off the scale at the minute. Defo a time to be careful.

That old 520 was the same as my old Sanderson Teleporter, based on a Ford 5000 tractor, reversed.  A bastard to start, as the ancient motor needed a complete rebuild.  It was a pig to drive, with poor visibility and the old thing had been bashed around so much before I got it - everywhere you looked had been in a fight.  Got rid of it in the end coz the hydrostatic transmission started to fail and the repair was going to be a huge bill - engine-out job.  It went to Poland, where I guess they'd do the job for peanuts.  Replaced it with this 10-year-old JCB 520-40 which has been great.

 

Little machine, but really punches above its weight.  Good visibility, easy to get in and out.  I don't like hydro-transmission, but I guess they've all got it.  Just make sure it's good before you buy one, coz that's one big repair job if it's dodgy.

I think a 10 year old machine will be way outta my price range. Would be perfect for me though
