I think if you buy sawn timber from the merchants its a full 2"x4"? What is usually bought from them is planned though?

Depends on what you're planning to do with it. If I was asked to cut timber which would be dried and planed to end up as 2x4 I'd cut it oversize by 1/4 inch but if its just going to be used as a rough sawn 2x4 then I'd cut it at exactly 2x4.

Spot on! When working as a joiner we would cut sawn timber to about 1/8"-1/4" oversize, this would allow us to straighten it when planing maybe a bit more if it was a really nasty grain.

And a small cherry stick.

Not done anything with the logosol M7 since september but have a load of logs coming this week and weather forecast is looking good end of the week so looking forward to getting some milling done

Beautiful wood! Love the oak!

 

 Question for the enlightened. Is it worth having a small milling bar for those logs of 15" or less diameter? I have a 36" and 48" bar, have some smaller logs,  yew, alder, ash which I want to mill up, just wondering if there is any point in getting a 20-24" bar on a small mill?

Or get a Logosol saw bench.
