Wanted. Monkey winch or sandwich powered winch wanted.

Hi all I’m in the market for a human powered winch for pulling trees in the right direction and a bit of tree from pond removal possibly pulling stuff on to trailers I like the idea of an old monkey winch because I like old machinery but I do like the idea that a tirfor can have an endless rope so no need to keep resetting. If it was a tirfor I would probably go for the big one, maybe overkill but rather be safe than sorry. 

What are people’s opinions on these?

What have people got for sale in the Sussex sorry and hampshite areas? And if not where/how much is a brand new tirfor?

Yale do a cable puller identical to tirfor but half the price.
I've got the 1.6 ton version and it's pretty tasty.
Weighs quite a bit though, with steel cables and ropes etc.
Gets heavier the further you have to walk it.
The 3.2 ton version is about the weight of a small bungalow.
If you get one, get the appropriate rated strops, shackles and rigging rope.

I have the 1.6 Yale . I have also had the " small bungalow " and sold that as I could hardly lift it ! . The only problem I have with the Yale is I can no longer engage neutral so can't pull the cable through free hand . Other than that it works well winching .

If you end up getting a tirfor style definitely buy a 4t ratchet puller cheapo Chinese winch too. They are 25quid and I will do alot to use that rather that getting the tirfor out. They are excellent tools but a pig to heave about setup.

believe it or not for the last month or so I've been investigating winches and such, the original intention  was for pulling my chippers onto a trailer..  before I knew It I was looking at all sorts of different winches..  the petrol powered ones the GRCS and many others in between..

 

I was tempted to get one of those GRCS  capstan winches but don't do anything like enough tree work to justify spending two and a half grand on them..  or the petrol powered ones for the same reason.

 

I eventually settled on a endless rope winch that costs about 70 quid from a manufacturer in the States..   bought through Amazon..  

 

I figured its better to buy a winch I'll end up using rather than a winch that spends most of its time in the shed..  

 

and one that don't cost an arm an a leg to sit in said shed gathering dust..

Where did you get it? Other than eBay I’m not sure where to look. 

Yale are American? Are tractel English?

Three quarter tonne pull for £70 ... you would be better off learning to tie the truckers hitch to pull over trees and bits from ponds.


Monkey winches are beasts , designed to pull out trucks in ww2 I believe, you need two or three men to pick one up though.
The large tirfors are not too bad and a hell of a lot more usable.
The small rip off Chinese versions are good but have there limits... I’ve found them !

There are lots of Yale/Ace brand winches that look like a Tirfor but they are not identical, they are cheap versions of a bombproof machine, they will not last anywhere near as long, If you only use them occasionally fine, if not, get a Tirfor.

Ive destroyed various crap Chinese winches.
The Yale cable puller is bomb proof.
I'd love to see some photos of a Yale you've broken?
