The clamps that hold the hinge arms to the torsion bar may be loose and just slip round rather than twist the bar .  If so I suppose it would need pre twisting before they are retightened .

Looking at some drawings i found on google, it looks like there is a bar that acts as a hinge, with a system similar to a garage door spring in it. Sounds like this has failed.

Thanks guys so far. Very helpful.
I've taken the front grill off, and there is indeed a bar.
Both sides seem to be weeping oil though. Ill put some pics up in a moment

So I've found the issue! A torsion bar indeed, that has snapped...going to need a crane or something to lift the cab off the engine, or jack up cab with four jacks or similar..so I can replace the broken part.1541585564846.jpeg

Not sure why you have called me catweazel. No one called catweazel on this thread either.
Mine never made any bad noises when driving...I couldn't lift the cab that's all. Torsion bar not much change out of 100 quid from Nissan. Took it to a garage to get it fitted as it was beyond me due to the weight of the cab...I believe it took four guys to lift the cab over. I think couple of hundred garage bill
