I have no objection to sport raising money for good causes . I have no objection to sport full stop .  Having played competitive squash for 40 odd years , cricket , rugby and judo .  What I was pissed about was the total lack of consultation when it obviously had been a long time in the planning .  We were just told , via a leaflet through the door , that we would not be able to leave or enter the village for the best part of a day .

So . Lets hope that for 2019 it can be better organized for all concerned , riders , marshals and the residents of all the surrounding villages .

I not sure if people missed the bit where you said your elderly father needs the carer to get in and out mate. My mates wife is a carer and she gets a very small window to see each client, if the window is missed for any reason that visit gets missed. Like you say plan it properly so people in the area can make alternative arrangements.

The event was  advertised across West Sussex in the press, on the radio, on TV and via social media. In addition over 20 local engagement meetings were held and promotional leaflets were distributed in spring 2018 to 160,000 residents and businesses along the route. This first leaflet drop was carried out three times due to a number of residents reporting that they had not received a leaflet. Impacted services and businesses have been contacted by telephone or email and over 1,000 enquiries have now been answered. On 13th August CSM Active commenced a second round of leaflet drops, which contain specific access plans for impacted towns and villages along the route.

In 1994 the Tour de France came to the U.K.

Like many club cyclists we were enlisted as marshals.

I was posted to a pedestrian crossing point in Rowlands Castle.

At the appointed time I closed my barrier and before the caravan came through.

People still tried to get across, one angry person wanted to use the Post office despite it being closed for the day.

Others claimed they knew nothing about the event.

One ultra old biddy had never heard of the race and didn't believe anyway that the TDF was passing and that I was being cheeky it being a French race.

We put up with it every few years as it breezes through our region, diversions, business shut for the day, still more happy people than nimby faced ones.

All the above may well be true but ,  ( I did not hear about it till 3 weeks before the event ) if it had gone ahead the result would still be the same . ...Unable to leave or enter our village for the day along with all the surrounding villages .

They go through the area where our lass comes from. It passes by so quick, there is no hassle! I drove down the road and not a marshal etc in site. No bother at all! While I'm no cyclist, they have every right to use the road for their sport and angry drivers get up my nose as they delay they might incur is so minor as to not be worth bothering about! Chill out next time you see someone enjoying their sport!

Do you get the hump when the football or rugby is on and crowds roam the streets too? How about the numbers of folk leaving a concert or other such event? Chill....

That would be fine . BUT if it had taken  place we would not be able to enter or leave our village all day .  Would you " chill " ?

In a race this is what happens. They are all through in the blink of an eye and the road is open again. These day Spotives  are the rage. These tend to have a large amount of participants with a huge range of abilities on long rides so towards the end of these events you have riders coming through for many hours. I am a cyclists but cycling is a victim of it's own success with these large organised events starting to pee people off which cant be good for cycling in general. I would be fed up if I was in Stubby's shoes. Dont know what the answer is though.
