Really interesting to read about fatherhood stuff here. I don't have children but I have two nephews; 12 and 17 year old boys. When they visit and I do the Uncle thing, I frankly find little to praise them for. I admit that the way they live their lives is different to mine thus I am biased and would be more encouraging to children who had a healthy interest in healthy pursuits and practical matters, not kids who might excel at debating yet be utter crap at anything that involves physical effort or a self disciplined work ethic. Efeminate hairstlyed, scared of hard work adolesents not my cup of tea as you can tell. Thus sayeth Mr Harsh.

We need, writers, thinkers, analysts, philosophers and all manner of other talents in this world, not just grafters. In fact if we were all grafters the world woud be in a right state, somebody has to stay behind and get others things organised.

Encouragement should be for everybody whatever their strengths. APart from lazy teenagers of course, get them splitting wood I say!!

This thread has touched a nerve . My father was a war baby and his father was not in his life. Hence no roll model. My father spent most nights in the pub and had very little to do with me and my brothers. I now find I have to make a special effort with my two boys and keep my self in check when critisicing and remember to encourage. i think we have to remember they are children and to a certain extent remain so until in their 20's . Its amazing how many generations it takes to repair itself i feel sorry for future generations with the amount of broken relationships these days.
