Blakes was my favourite hitch for years. The stopper knot just acts as a back up for when all your training and knowledge abandons you for some reason.  In much the same way that you may tie a knot at the tail end of your rope. I mean, no one in their right mind is going to descend off the end of their rope, however, sometimes the unexpected happens.

Never saw it happen but saw the result . Nasty back injury . Some cracked vertebrae . This was a climber who is well respected and has years of experience . It was from about 10 feet only .
