Just watching a bloke on YouTube extolling the virtues of a stopper know for said hitch. Then it dawned on me. It’s a waste of time as if it came loose you are fucked anyway.

This is correct yes or have I had too many Speckled Hen ( I have)

I’d rather one was loose than undone. Branch friction or even putting a knot in your tail when you’re ten feet up would probably mean you’d survive.

Blakes was my favourite hitch for years. The stopper knot just acts as a back up for when all your training and knowledge abandons you for some reason.  In much the same way that you may tie a knot at the tail end of your rope. I mean, no one in their right mind is going to descend off the end of their rope, however, sometimes the unexpected happens.

I've seen it happen mate.

Thankfully it wasn't me, it was my gaffer at the time.

No damage luckily, apart from a badly bruised ego, landing in a shrub bed saved him from a hard landing after a fall of about 15'.

I’ve come off the end of my rope a couple of times.

In fact if there’s some kind of idiotic mistake to be made I will find a way to do it.

Never saw it happen but saw the result . Nasty back injury . Some cracked vertebrae . This was a climber who is well respected and has years of experience . It was from about 10 feet only .
