I actually prefer them on some our jobs as if the tree is ending up a Habitat column, it mimics woodpecker damage. K

Can't see an issue, the intent is to encourage decay and habitat niches in those circumstances.

There was a thread here somewhere that looked at the formation of epicormic on beech, it was thought that in some cases the tearing effect of the cambium encouraged shoots to form from using an axe or spike wounds . I m not brave enough to try it though!

I’ve worn them on some big retrenchment s, figure if your putting 25” cuts in the main stems a few spike marks are the least of the trees problems!
