yep i seized my drum too! i still run 6mm dyneema on it but half as much, its not as long as id like it but still easier to use than the wire rope. Nice bit of kit though. i would like to try one of the small petrol capstan winch though.

Eder Power Winch is nice but they are about £1800 i think....so i've stuck with my tirfor for now!

what sort of pulling weight are we talking about needing with winches? i'm thinking of 8ft lengths of softwood trunks for milling

Depends on how wide the trunks are?

i've been using my pick up with shackle but getting deeper into the woods is starting to cause access problems. thinking trifor 1250 kg pulling would be sufficient on level ground?

Life is waaay to short to use a Tirfor to extract timber. They are great for pulling trees over, but painfully slow if you need to move something any distance.

How about a petrol capstan winch? I bought a Docma winch from Treadlight Forestry and it's a great bit of kit. This is the sort of thing you should be looking at for this job.

I saw cyclone winches and they are pretty reasonable for 1000kg pull. In a frame for protection. Honda engines.
