Get a sharp scalpel to cut the new gaskets. Oh, if the old gasket is broken into to two or more pieces put them back together on the photo copier then cut the copy out to use as a stencil, much easier than trying to hold two or more pieces to cut around.

The carb gaskets don't need to be a specific thickness unless the original is massively thick. The cylinder base gasket determines the squish, compression and also the port timing so is relatively important.

I do make my own to speed up a repair if I haven't got a spare or for vintage kit. Punches, a hand hole punch and scalpels help.

Press the uncut gasket paper on the joint then rub an oily finger over it to show the outline before cutting.

This but after rubbing leave it in situ and tap it with the ring end of a ring spanner and it will cut it in situ perfect.

You can tap gently with a ball peen hammer and cut it out in situ, although on an aluminium part you need to be careful

This is a technique taught by the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, the Mechanics of the British Army.

Place gasket paper in place and rub a spanner or hammer over it and gently tap the edges it will cut to shape perfectly.

Far more accurate than trying to use scissors.
