Surely the contractor is simply trying to fulfil the contract? The blame should be with the contract itself shouldn’t it?

Basically it was a big wad of cash to get the job done and Amey took the cheap route- smash them tha' trees down bwoy' - an it's turned into this :( K

( Obvs doing a public opinion survey - choosing careful staged works and providing new mitigation planting and flexible paving systems with educational walk - in centers and accurate tree condition surveys .....was too much bother ..... )

Why is that the job of the contractor?
It must have been put out to tender so somebody at the council signed off on this long before contract was agreed. Talk about shifting the blame. I bet they wished they had never seen the tender!

Mick- If I turn up to chop down a tree that I find easily retainable ( with a bit of effort ) I am gonna say something , if I am bidding on a job ( viewing the survey data ) it is gonna be noticeable - and the consequences aint hard to see on a large contract like Sheffield K

Surely Amey didn’t do the specs, they just do the work as it’s placed in front of them by the LA.

Amey have the contract for all services including roads, pavements and trees. They have their own Tree inspectors who identify ‘problem’ trees which are causing ‘damage’  to pavements, kerbs and roads. The council appointed an independant Tree Panel who on numerous occasions have looked at condemned trees and said they should be retained only to have the decision overturned by the very council that appointed them.  Obviously it is far quicker and cheaper to resurface if the teees aren’t there.  Alternative engineering solutions as put forward by independent bodies are being ignored. Because of  course it also eats into the profits. It’s a total mess and utter madness Mick.

surely Amey would prefer to leave all of the street trees so they can be paid to repair the roads and footpaths every year?!

Then they have to maintain 1000’s of mature trees for the next 25 years of the contract. Take out a number of the decent trees, resurface, plant saplings which will need very little work, sit back.
