Chinese lantern tree

Really nice trees. I've only ever seen one in a garden, without the lanterns on at the time. It was one of those awkward moments which caught me out when the customer asked "what is it?" and I had to then check a book and get back to them!

I've not heard of this tree so looked it up on t'interweb. It's not  Dichrostachys cinerea and it's not Crinodendron hookerianum as that's evergreen! 

 

I'm away from home and my ident books at the moment. Can anyone shed light on what the botanical name of this tree is? 

 

I recently came across a Halesia carolina (Snowdrop tree) which has similar lanterns on it.

i have some timber from one that was local to me and was milled by delabodge and he has the timber stored at his yard.

 

it's very like ash except it has a small brown heart from memory.

K. paniculata is a common garden tree - got one meself! - but not what's in the pic. It's common name is the Golden Rain Tree. The flowers are on 1ft long (or more) upright yellow panicles.

Looks like one to me Jon, quite a few round our way and we took a biggish one down in Kew the other week.

What else has seed pods like that?

You're right Kev; I've not noticed the pods on mine!  Never heard it called Lantern Tree thought - Golden Rain Tree is how I know it.

They are common in the south though.
