Is anyone here able to supply some round 150mm by 3 metre oak structural pillars in North Devon? Can be green but preference from quarters of oak.

At that length you'd be best asking a local sawmill if they can machine round cleft oak for you.

To get all heartwood would require a 900+mm piece of oak so whilst cleft would be best it's also a bit riskier to get 4 posts from.

Try Dave Welch @ Hillside Timber - 07825 944822 - he's based near Exeter Airport, good with one off projects.

Thanks I'll try him. Else I may have to find a lump in Surrey and ship them down.

if only i had a lathe that long. thanks for recommending me though...

it has always been my intention to do that size of turning and i could set up something to turn it but i need to buy an free standing tool rest first.

i did do a 12' maypole in three bits so if it doesn't need to be turned as a whole piece then give me a bell.

I have Trekkasaw Man's details if you want them!  Oak framed buildings are now his thing.

Thanks, if we do it here I'll probably use the Lucas as that will cut the squares out of the quarters in one hit.

Bloody architects I think it would be better done in douglas as I'll need about 450mm of heartwood at the top diameter. Making some centres at 3m won't be a big deal but as 7thdevil says rigging a toolrest will be interesting

Interesting project,

They used to turn columns in the whole rather than quartered, then saw a slot to the centre of the stem to control where shrinkage cracks would open up then wedge a fillit in to finish them.

I missed out on a pto powered Lathe with girders for the bed for just this job not so long ago, if anyone knows of one id be tempted!
