Rope abrasion protection ?

I occasionally climb and prune my own deciduous trees.

I wonder if I need to protect my semi static rope where it goes over the branch/crotch.

If it is necessary does anybody have any advice on what to use.

Maybe I could make something myself.

Cheers, Olly.

Not necessary. I sometimes use a cambium saver which is a strip with rings in end that goes over the branch and your rope goes through rings. This reduces friction and wear on rope and tree.

But totally nonessential. I o my use if moving through the canopy a lot of up and down on a big thin etc

Great, a bunch of trained arborists giving a "I bought a rope and harness guy" advice. Let me guess, you've got your Bosch electric saw up there with you?

Yes, that's outrageous. Experienced people giving less experience people advice... on a forum.

Put the saw down Olly, and walk away from the tree slowly keeping your hands where we can see them

I'm grouchy today.
However he's not an arborist and could end up hurting himself seriously.

Ignore the trolling Ollie47, I would be concerned about abrasion, for the trees sake. Fruit trees tend to be thin barked no? Just use the rope as is until you can reach the crotch then pad the tree with something, an old wadded t shirt or whatever. Tie a bit of string to it so you can retrieve it from the ground later

If your rope's an arborists rope, then you probably don't need to worry about abrasion from rubbing on branches.  The rope moving could damage the bark and cambium of your trees.  If you're only climbing occasionally, then it probably won't matter much.  It's up to you.

As pointed out though, it's easier on your body and more fun if you use something to reduce the friction at the crotch. (Giggedy)
