My chipper is air cooled which blows air through an oil cooler ontop of the engine, if and I must stress if, my gloves do somehow get wet, I just put them ontop of the oil cooler during tea break after the chipper has been running and they are dry and warm as toast after

Hi. Sorry for that slight detour with a first post but does any know of good thornproof(ish). We do loads of blackthorn/hawthorn clearance stuff (digging splinters out now). Chainsaw gloves get trashed too quick for the money and welders guantlets are too think to use a saw confortably and seen too fill up with chip/sawdust. I dont mind shelling out on something if I know they're going to last.

Cheers

Yeah nothing like getting smacked round the back of the legs trying to get a big lump of blackthorn crown in the chipper!

Ok this is prob of no use but I had some cheapo (£4ish) leather gloves that had a bit of a fleece lining in. Were really good for hawthorns etc, I think the extra bit of padding helped alot. The leather was fairly soft but surprisingly good:thumbup1:

Now If I knew were I bought them it would probably be of some help!

Dickies do some excellent leather fleece lined gloves, great for thorn work. About £8.

You can use them on the ground easy enough, but are too cumbersome to climb in.

when i did my hedgelaying course the old boy who was teaching had a horsehide mitt made for him by a saddler. It might be worth having a word with your local saddler to make a mitt up from either horse hide or chromed leather.

did electric board work all last year and 90% of the work was thorn hedge reductions. i bought a pair of youngstown anti-vibe xt gloves and they worked a treat. good quality lasted most of the year and would still be going strong if one had not got pulled through the chipper

Cheers for the replies. Yeah I reakon AV gloves could be the way to go. I had some SIP one a few years ago and they seemed pretty good
