I have an old C Scope and have just tested it on my old William Griffiths Damascus barrelled 20 bore and I found it still blips at 12 inches!

Well done: elements of  the original and the derail.

Cscope also do Cable Avoidance tools which work on an entirely different  technique from the detectors. Detectors depend on the metallic object changing  the capacitance or inductance of a circuit in the detector whereas the CAT attempts to pick up a signal being given off by the metallic object. Hence if you can induce a signal in the metallic object you should get better results, normally only possible if you have access to one end of the wire but as I said earlier it may be possible to induce an eddy current  in a ferrous object which  would give of a signal..

With the CAT there are two receivers used in induced signal mode and the difference in time  between the signals being received is used to calculate the depth.

I just tested my MD3006ss (china special via a car boot sale) It finds my damascus knife at 18", it has saved much saw sharpening in the past

I got a Whites IDX and ported it....well did some tweaks to give you greater depth etc, courtesy of some dude called Mr Bill....nice machine now hence the other one being available.

I have a Whites Coinmaster so I had better try that one out too.  It is probably very unlikely  and unluckythat you will be unfortunate to come across a Damascus barrel in the middle of a log!

Tuning your Whites IDX reminds me of my youth porting and tweaking my Ford Escort.  you didn't fit twin Webers on it as well did you?!!

Nah, it is basically taking trimmers off the main board and fitting normal pots so you can adjust thresholds and sensitivity that are not normally adjusted out of the factory to gain 2-4" depth. Relatively simple with the right instructions and just luck I managed to get hold of one of these older machines and find the instructions....God bless the forums!
