Daihatsu fourtrak your thoughts on using to tow 3500 kg

Found a very clean genuine 1999 one owner. But mot says seat belt anchorage rot etc over the last few years. Don't think they have abs. Always thought they were a bit light for big towing. Need a reliable workhorse with out too many lights on the dash.

Some can be prone to overheating problems, apparently.

mate of mine loves them and he's cynical about everything (makes his living from fixing/welding 4x4s, like all jap 4x4s its all about rust, get a clean one, plaster it in waxoil and it'll outlast and out tow just about any other motor, great workhorse, popular with farmers and equestrian types, says enough!

Bloody good tow trucks

One thing to be aware of is the belly pan on ours had sound proofing stuck to it, which does an excellent job of soaking up vast amounts of oil, found that out after my gearbox developed a serious leak and the first thing I knew about it was when the gearbox failed

If I could find a really nice one I would snap it up.

Was going to keep the engine from my first one but as a mechanic friend said, the last thing you will ever need for a Fourtrak is a spare engine.

 

I would take a Fourtrak over a Landy any day.

I have found a nice one bodywork and interior virtually unmarked and one owner from the time it was 12 months old.But even so previous mots have picked out a bit of rot over the last few years. Need to get underneath and see what and how well it's been repaired. Generally I only tow for 7 miles twice a week on country lanes so not trying to haul 3 tonnes across the country. I did have a low mileage 6 year old one but that was 16 years ago. I did like it then.

Best towing motor I've ever had, it was my first jeep. Years before the Internet told us what to like and dislike, I had no idea of towing capacities, I bought the jeep I could afford and the trailer I could borrow then buy! Load it to the baws and drive home slowly, if it felt a bit dodgy, slow down and don't put as much in next time, but that rarely happened with the diahatsu!

Good reviews from people who really know their stuff. After 12 years of sterling service from my Amazon the only thing that stops me buying another is the hideous cost. Part prices from the after market are dirt cheap for a four trak.
