Causes of "bottle-butt"

Hi all,

 

I'm doing a study on some veteran trees as part of my course and have come across the veteran oak near me via the ancient tree hunt site, could anybody shed any light on the possible causes of the bottle-butt for me to research?

 

My initial thought was pseudoinonotus dryadeus but I have been unable to find any fruiting bodies so it's making me look for other causes.

Whilst the tree may be hollow and the image is a bit dark the growth looks more like a burr than reaction wood to me.

Apologies that does look really dark on my work computer too, didn't seem to bad at home.

Cant see much for all that darkness, the "shoulder" looks a bit sudden, have you ruled a graft site rather than a pathogen out?

That looks more like a canker to me buddy.

Fungus will only fruit when it hits oxygen. The tree is airtight, save the medullary Rays, so it could be hollow and not fruiting. Unlikely though, could be that the fruiting body has been removed or is rotten.

I still tho it's bacterial canker though.

Bottle butt is just reaction wood put on be the tree to stop it over flexing, and will usually as the name suggests, look like a bottle
