It works on the same principle as a pendulum or Ouija board, the nervous system recieves information from the unconscious mind and moves the hand-arm muscles which move the rods, but it feels involuntary because the conscious mind tricks itself into being sidelined. What dowsers are actually doing is tapping into universal information, but they don't realise it. If you experiment with it, you can "find" abstract things, like the location of missing people and even knowledge of future events by asking the visual amplifier - the rods or pendulum or whatever, Yes or No questions, and use a system of elimination to arrive at answers to all kinds of stuff. Potentially very dangerous for the experimenter. As long as dowsers think it's about magnetism and stick to finding pipes, they're safe enough...

But then if that's true- Eggs method of putting the handles in pipe wouldn't work right?!

But then if that's true- Eggs method of putting the handles in pipe wouldn't work right?!

The holder tilting the pipe in one direction or the other would swing the wire.

Still, I've seen it work too many times to discount it.

On one of my uncles' farms there was a chap that wandered through the dairy shed. Said uncle was about to physically remove him when he said he was there as a friend of his misses. Oh, and by the way: do the cows in that spot (long time ago, cows were stalled tied on) get ill more often than others?

Enough bollox!, cried my uncle and booted him out.

Later that day, curiosity gnawing on his mind, he went through the medicine records and found that indeed the cows in that spot were ill about twice the average!

Simple explanation for that, he thought: when they built the cow shed they must've created a draft just there or such. Never mind, a new shed is being built in spring.

New shed built, different housing system, doors in different places, cows sick in the same spot!

I know a few more like that that are just too much to be coincidence.

Much as I'd like to believe in dowsing, I just can't take it serious...

Not least since I saw a documentary on the subject a few years back... during scientific blind tests on subjects who reckoned they were good at it, they found they couldn't repeat their results under test conditions...

in other words the test subjects were guessing, consciously or otherwise.. those who get it right happened to be havin more luck as much as an ability to dowse for water..
