True, but how often do we tow 3.5 T? (Digger draggers accepted) I do wonder i we are all a bit obsessed with the 3.5 t thing? Myself included.

 

Can easily pop it up to SV to uprate when you get your tacho fitted...?

One of my machines that I need to tow to site puts me just over 3000kg, and that's before there is anything else in the trailer. Safer just to have that 3500kg capacity so that there is a safety margin.

 

I don't think that new vehicle ownership is any more expensive than used vehicle ownership, once you factor in repairs and downtime (lost time at work). I'd generally, personally have a newer vehicle and enjoy those benefits than have something older where you're never sure if and when it's next going to break down. For instance, my 4x4 Sprinter is presently in with a Mercedes specialist for a new intake manifold and wheel speed sensor, and including the diagnostics (which have to be done by a Merc specialist or Mercedes, due to the software) it's costing me just the wrong side of £1000 including VAT. That's 2 months of finance payments on a new truck.

 

Not a great fan of the Landcruiser commercials. Very basic and a lot of money too.

Old Range Rover has cost me about £900 in service and repair costs last 40,000 miles, probably lost £500 in depreciation. Granted that’s me doing the work mostly. Let me down once (literally..air strut!) but was still drivable with trailer on too and even then it was repairable in 30 mins at garage. Nfu would have recovered me straight away had I not driven it straight to a garage to see if they had the strut. 

Last new pick up lost £15,000 in depreciation in 5 years and cost well over £5000 in service and repairs for 80,000 miles. That’s when I started buying second hand again.

It was pretty straight forward to get a car version changed to a commercial if they have a commercial model.  When we went from partnership to Ltd I did it to our Land Cruiser Colorado. IIRC I just removed the seats and seatbelts, blacked out the windows and sent a letter to the DVLA.

I test drove the Ssang Yong Musso a couple of months ago and wasn't hugely impressed. But then I test drove the Navara today and that wasn't great either. Considering they both have 180-190bhp, they are sluggish. Same for the 3.2l Ranger I test drove last year. All have cramped uncomfortable interiors too. Interestingly though, the Navara (Tekna) and the Ssang Yong were almost the same price (£26900 and £26000 respectively) and the Navara was definitely the superior vehicle. Higher list price on the Navara but most discount applied.

 

Still unsure about what to do vehicle wise, but it's looking like a second van (crew cab) as the second work vehicle and a V10 Touareg for the occasional towing I do. Who knows though!

Sluggish? It’s a flipping pick up truck j, not a sports car! Congratulations on taking the Navara for a test drive....pigs do fly after all! ?

Yeah makes me laugh, “ thinking of a hilux, what’s the mpg like? Fuck off, if you’re worried about mpg don’t buy a pick up.[emoji20]

I owed it a test drive. I haven't heard anything bad about them in the press or otherwise, which is a marked improvement on the D40. 

 

I would be using a pickup mainly for towing. If it's distinctly average in terms of acceleration when unloaded, not towing and on the flat, it'll be a PITA towing up hills. It wasn't much brisker than my 160bhp Sprinter. 

 

For the record, the Ssang Yong was worse and the Ranger was no better.

 

I just wish they'd stick proper engines in pickups instead of asthmathic little 4 cylinder power plants. I know that the Ranger has 6, but it's a lazy lump of a powerplant.

 

The lowest power output motor offered with a new Ford F150 is 290bhp, which is over 30bhp more than the highest power output you can get on any pickup here.
