mpg vs tyre size

In theory yes, bigger tyres act as higher gearing, cover more ground for same effort. I'm not sure how much by though, does it also reduce torque to though?

 

cant really tell on the torque tho,its an auto box as was the other , its dropping 100miles to the tank or 8 to the gallon , !!32 vs 24

I noticed the same thing on my Renault Trafic van, I switched from normal 195 van tyres to Ranger 215 all terrain tyres on the front to help me access our field. The circumference on the tyres is bigger although the wheel size is the same (16") but I've gone from 640 miles to a tank (80L) down to 550 miles. I guess the rolling resistance has worsened because I cannot inflate the Rangers to as high a PSI as I had with the commercially rated tyres.

My D-max auto has done 27mpg average over 24k miles on the original bridgestone dueler road tyres. I've just fitted cooper discovery AT3's in the same size and dropped to 26ish MPG.

 

I don't drive very sympathetically and a lot of journeys are short hence the slightly poor mpg. 32mpg is what dreams are made of!!

just checking this out, will i get reduced mpg if my 4x4 has bigger tyrse fitted . old dmax was on 17" the new 1, is on 18", ???

 

Its all down to overall tyre diameter and profile not rim size Johny , you can get a 13" full profile tyre that has a bigger overall diameter than an 18"rim with a low profile tyre. Check out the tyre gumph, that should give the right info.
