Christmas call-out/standby

For those of you who do Christmas Day standby how much do you pay your staff to be on standby? How much do you pay for each call-out? What is the difference in hourly pay compared with a 'normal' days work?

When I was employed I had no choice about being on call (part of my contract), we were payed decent money to do it mind.

Are you boys on call today getting well paid for it?

Do you work for hmrc eggs? Pounds shillings and pence seems to be your main subject on here lol have a beer :thumbup1:

Or go tool up and become a millionaire like the rest of us

No I don't work for HMRC. If I did I wouldn't have been under investigation by them this year.

I've had a beer thanks.

If you got called out today would you do it on your normal day rate?

Hard to say really. It should be extra but depepnds on the situation.

Top and bottom of it is that i dont want to do emergency call outs.

Some must want to and will charge extra as lads will want extra and rightly so.

Most will have had a beer by now though?

Ask gray git when he gets back from one later today.

I used to do it, but it was for a LA that gave me 3 or 4 days a week, week in, week out and payed good rates, so I felt obliged and grateful. I charged 3X my normal rated and payed lads the same.

When I was young, keen and trying to build my business I loved it, but not these days.

Almost the same as above, we do a lot of emergency works which alway pay well above normal rates but today it's extra again, it's normally a fixed rate per call-out which some you think were OK but not brilliant and others are frankly easy extra money for the lads and the business.

Today took 1 1/2 hrs from 1st call to me being back home as as a relatively small tree which came down onto a road and unfortunately put a car windscreen through so had policy attendance.

I don't mind doing them as goos for the business which I put a lot of work into and if it helps get better gear or means I can earn a lot in a little time and not impact anything else and then take a few days off to take kids out payed for by 1 nights work I don't mind doing it.

Think in a few years time I might think differently and pass more onto willing staff who think the same about earning extra for there family.

Discussed with my staff before we broke up for Xmas that anytime from 6pm on the 24th till 7.30 am on the 27th will be double time regardless of hours (over 9 hrs would be more). I would charge £80 per hour, per man from door to door for a minimum of 4 hours (during the day) £160 per hour for evenings (after 6pm).

Will domestic folk pay that though?
