Alright

Just bought a load of climbing kit with the intentions of making the move from groundie to climber...

Can any of you recall ever being told or can you suggest what trees are best for practicing climbing techniques on?

Cheers :thumbup1:

Take on all comers regardless. In the real world, you don't get to pick and choose so get used to it now.

To echo some of the previous comments; find a good old oak with a nice open crown, that'll help build confidence.

But as Treequip said, don't be afraid to tackle anything that comes your way, the more knowledge you can gain regarding different tree species the better. Have fun

Treequip is bang on-if your serious about climbing,my advice is to climb the scariest, slipperiest piece of **** tree you can find.It will build confidence.

Of course you could go low and slow, which is what i did then i climbed in the real world and it scared the **** out of me,massive common lime on a pissin wet day...reality check.

If you want to build confidence in your equipment get up an ash or beech. Do some big limb walks. The beauty of these trees is you can get an anchor in right at the top of the tree making it easier to move about. But as said before climb anything you can as you will not only be climbing nice big hardwood trees all the time. I would say climb in the rain but non until you are a little more confident as climbing in the rain can be twice as hard on some trees and it can make you very miserable (you don't want to loose you love of tree work just yet).

In work try and get some time on spikes as well as that is another learning curve and one you will need to do at some point soon.

Good luck and have fun :-)
