I guess it was to reduce effort, timber that diameter is not going anywhere and they obviously had some serious winch power.

He appears to have his feet flat on the tree, so i am guessing no spikes.

Epic video - looks like one of those Japanese Temples & tree was hollow inside so they decided it needed to be felled.

I don't get it.

No ear or eye protection so why bother with a helmet?

No long rope to get out the tree in an emergency/cup of tea!

No gob cut to control direction!

Windsurf boots with some spikey thing tied on with some garden string!

 

But it seems to work well for him.
