Some very hard wood is best mixed with softwood or split a bit smaller, oak and laurel come to mind. As others have said, to test the wood correctly, take a big lump, split it and measure the centre.

There is " kiln dried wood " akin to flash frying a steak , then there is kiln dried wood that has been in the kiln long enough to make it dry all the way through and at the same time loosing some of the volitiles and then there is air dried wood ( my favorite ) . 15% moisture is 15% moisture however its achieved but , air dried for me all day long .

In exchange for some tree work and firewood, I now don't need to pop a vein in my neck pushing 1000kg into my garage each evening. Yet to try it on grass but I've a job in January where we can try that. Just in case it doesn't work, my colleague will bring his 4x4 mower to tow it into place. It this proves successful, I'll look at a more beefed up jockey. I need to adjust a rubber air hose to give the control box under the hood more room. Sounds like the 16-23 SafeTrack ? Unfortunately no longer in production due to the engine emissions regs , a brilliant chipper if you can track one down although most owners tended to keep hold of them. I agree in it being potentially better than the AT150 which had a fixed track base. The Tracked EVO 165 is a very capable 6" machine.

When employed we had the 6inch safe track, Isuzu motor, great wee machine, far better than a 150. im assuming whatever you’re looking at you’ll want varitrack?

So what you are saying is you only tested the outside. If it has been kilned quickly the outside will be dry and the middle sopping wet. You need to split a large piece and test the centre. All wood will burn well if dry.

Kiln drying for firewood is a con. It dries the ends so aggressively that the xylem collapse. The water in the middle can't escape. Or so I see the world anyway.

You can leave it alone; eventually, the adult insect emerges. If you’re curious, you could put it in a ventilated container and watch from a distance.

Where it's a tall cheese shapes wedge I did it all round with the meter apart from the bark side and they were all pretty much the same. I didn't recognise the wood as anything I'd seen before so just wondered if maybe whatever it is just isn't great for stoves.

A photo of the cut end would help. And how did you test the moisture? In the middle or the edge? It makes a massive difference.

I am gonna try these next. i have had two pairs of Aku and got 7 years out of my first pair and on the 8th year in my second pair. Only used for pruning though. You need to attach the photo. But also when you tested the moisture did you split a piece and test the middle?

Can anybody tell me what wood this is? Mother in law has just had a burner installed, I gave her some wood I had which burnt absolutely fine and she ordered some kiln dried of which this is one log and it burns really poorly .... It lights but is difficult to keep it alight. I stuck a moisture meter on it and it's between 14 and 16% so pretty much what kiln dried should be but it's really not great!

Must be suitable for firewood but happy to split and season it myself
