Tree shedding leaves in May. Worried.
MattyF replied to LlamaDave's topic in Tree Identification pictures
Yeah …. What ever has gone on around the bottom of the tree has caused that. never change the soil level around a tree. - Today

There’s been a few posts over the years about getting the bigger saw up the tree. It can be a chew, especially at the end of the job when cramp and fatigue can be an issue. I usually lay the rope over the stump while pulling up, so at least if I want to pause for a rest all I have to do is place my hand on the rope to give me 30 seconds to re-gird my loins (or forearms in this case) I am all for making life easier, but how hard is it pull up a 70cc saw 30 or so feet?

I used to love listening to Bob Harris Country on the way back from the smallbore club at Bury St Edmunds. Used to overtake everything for sport in my fabulous little 1.6 petrol (carburated) Vitara. Fabulous thing. Haven't had a vehicle with a good radio since. Wednesday nights from memory.

Clip a foot/knee ascender in if you're worried about that. Help bring the saw up with your leg.

spandit started following Steve Wright in the afternoon. , Firewood processor hire? and Cherry - seasoning time?

I have a load of quite straight trunks from my woodland thinning. All about 4 feet long by 6-10" diameter. Whilst I could just saw and split it myself over a few days, just wondering what the feasibility of hiring in someone with a processor would be? Shouldn't take too long
-
Needs a prusik or tibloc or other for progress capture so your groundie doesn't drop the saw when they get distracted and wander off.
-
Lovely firewood. With enough airflow it should be good for the coming winter

Tree shedding leaves in May. Worried.
LlamaDave replied to LlamaDave's topic in Tree Identification pictures
Thanks. The builders seems to have dumped a pile of clay soil near the tree which may not be helping. Their construction is probably 7m from the trunk. Here's a couple of photos of the trunk and surroundings. Thanks for your help. -
As this is the radio thread.. Sunday afternoons Sound Of The 70s with Bob Harris is a gem of a show. Last couple of years (for obvious reasons) Johnny Walker was just phoning it in and whilst it was good, it stagnated a bit. But now Bob does it live, with great music picked by him and brilliant (true) stories about interviews with the stars of the the time. Clearly more for the oldies, but radio magic nevertheless.

Yeah thought about it but like you say bastards would drill a 800 quid tank to nick 70 quids worth of diesel and not give a toss

The smell from the just flowering hawthorn walking out our lane in the morning, while the dew is still on the grass, or of any random evening, is quite sublime. Though a few Oak seedlings in pots seem to have had their tender leaves nipped by the couple of mornings of tight hoar frost this past week. The weather here in N I. Since March, has been shocking fine and dry and sunny. Today there is not a cloud in the sky, and a warm wind from the South. Other years, mid May, it could be perishing cold , wet and miserable. With a proper bastard lazy wind.

Tree shedding leaves in May. Worried.
Ruskins Trees replied to LlamaDave's topic in Tree Identification pictures
Liam The dropping of leaves is a sign of stress. The tree is stopping losing moisture through transpiration, to compensate for the struggle its roots are having. On a new build the soil is likely to be compacted, this is sufficient to stress a tree. This restricts the gaseous exchange by the roots and the percolation of moisture into the soil. In addition the soil levels may have changed, which will again stress the tree. Root damage may have occurred during construction. Please post a picture of the trunk as it enters the soil to see if the soil level has changed. We have had a very dry April and start to May, but not sufficient imho for leaves to drop as a response to heat or lack of moisture. Mulch the tree, to 3" deep, as wide as you can, keeping the immediate area around the trunk clear. This will not solve the issues, but will help. -

Just moved into a new build with a lovely wooded area to the rear. Past few days the tree (Sycamore?) has been shedding a lot of leaves and im concerned furniture health. Attached are some photos of the tree, shedded leaves and healthy leaves. Any advice? Isn't just because kfnthe warm weather or something more troubling? Thanks. Ps. There's a fair few leaves btw, this is what's dropped overnight.

Just turns a 100l theft at 63p into a few grand of pain. I even leave the keys in mine when it's in the shed, rather they steal the whole thing unmolested and recovered possibly still usable.
