My experience is the opposite, assesors tend to hand out certificates without much care if the student is any good at it. Hedger and brush cutter was paid for by rail boss, was 10 minutes talk, couple minutes cutting each, then given the slip of paper, told to turn our phones off and disapear until 4pm, this was at about 8:30am. One of them was 100% green never used outdoor tools before. A week later, he is using hedger above his head, drops and catches it, amputating his finger. It got sewn back on.. Doing my CS31, one of the guys was unsafe, cut through his hinge, he didnt know the different felling cuts and had to be taughg by assesor, and didnt have proper control of a saw. Assesor passed him anyway, knowing he was in work for a local company and should quickly learn. The other guy was unable to safely use a saw and got told to find a different industry. When it came to cs38/39, the first guy had greatly improved and could now use a saw correctly, but was green with climbing, knots etc...

What is your wage as a percentage of the monthly turnover? Without knowing that,we are all in the dark.

Spikes, what do you use and what type of fastening do they have around the foot - have you tried other types? I've used Distel's and a few others, all had worn out leather straps, found them a pain to get on and needed a few adjustments before they were secure for climbing. I want to get my own pair with a different type, likely the webbing buckles.

I saw a vid once where they tested lots of different gauge sets . From 13s down to 8s ( I use 9s my self ) and they could not tell any significant difference until you got down to the 8s and then they had to do a back to back with the 13s to be sure .

Not the assessor But the instructor at my sons course should have been failed ! He broke the side cover on my 346 that I had lent Jack for the course . He tried levering it off with a big flat bladed screw driver with the brake still engaged . Wanker . He said in his defense " its not like that on a Stihl "
-
He was but then retired from being an assessor. So I didnt have a chance to thrash it out with him
-
So your assessor wasnβt even an assessor?
-
That's fair point , its not allowed on building sites
-
We did at nptc Kenilworth, Stoneleigh and we're told he didnt do assements for nptc .we had feedback from other people that he wasn't a great assessor for other reasons

I witnessed a CS30 assessment that was taking place while I was doing my Aerial Rigging training way back. The assessor was an no nonsense type old boy and one of the candidates was wearing a beanie hat under his helmet. He let the lad get as far as starting his saw on the ground and failed him on the spot for having his hat under his helmet. Seemed a bit harsh at the time π€£

Shame you werenβt a confident 18 year old who would surely have challenged the assessors decision, after all, you did everything right.

Apart from the hinge removal bit?
-
I have worked alongside tractor based and purpose built forwarders for over 30 years so I do have a fair idea of their capabilities. So now the assessor did deal with it, this bullshit is getting deeper by the minute. π

Taking everything you say at face value - I would pay you Β£180 a day (after tax/PAYE). There are a lot of variables at play though - is most of your work domestic? How saturated is your area? Just bear in mind that not all businesses /owners are making loads of money which will be reflected in what they can pay their staff (not your problem I know but is if youβre geographically locked). You sound like you work well as part of the company and maybe all you need to do is have a chat with the boss!

SRV swapped from guage 13 to 11s when he quit cocaine. Clearly 13's here.

I did everything by the book. Literally

I know Crystal clear what happend and how it happend . I doubt you know the capabilities of a forwarder, I dont either ...as you will only know if you refer to the operators manual same as tracked carriers.. every machine is different . The forwarder was on full outreach ,working from a ride ,the tree was still semi attached by hinge. The assessor should of dealt with it not the candidate , and no feedback . Wether you like someone as a candidate or not your there to asses them nothing else . In the end the assessor just took chunks of the tree until it fell to the ground ... not good practice .
-
I know what the capabilities of a forwarder are and how to untangle a tree π. If you have safely attempted to bring down a hung tree using appropriate methods but where unable to do so, and you arranged mechanical assistance to deal with it, you would not fail, you clearly failed for other things, memory has a funny way of playing tricks.
